Portrait

Reflection

It took me a while to complete my grid as my picture was a rectangle and I was a bit confused at first. Also, I have never tried drawing a realistic nose and mouth so I couldn't get them like the one in my picture. The shading was a little time-consuming but I am happy with how it turned out. But there were a bit of issue in the end and the eye wasn't the way I wanted it to be so I rubbed it and it was a huge mistake. I tried fixing the eye but it just wasn't coming out well.
I spent a lot of time shading her face but not her hand which I forgot about. Although she doesn't look  like my reference, which was the point of the portrait, the sketch was pretty close to it. But as my first portrait, I'd say it wasn't all that bad.

Peer Abstract Music Composition

Reflection

For my art, I choose Aamnah's artwork as I have seen her art before and she draws really well.  In her artwork, she only used a piano and she has only used a piano in there. So I thought it would be a challenge to only do a piece using piano components. I used Ostinato and Sound cloud in this piece. My abstract music comprises of the piano loops I found on Garageband as I didn't know how to play the piano. I think her picture depicts harmony and abrupt stops n between, which I have represented by the first bit you hear after the ostinato which is the constant piano beat.

I think I could have improved it by adding a proper ending but then it adds on to the abstract perspective of it.

Ostinato

The macarena's in the background are depicting my ostinato and play from the beginning till the end.

Sound Cloud

I thought that my sound cloud sounded quite upbeat. As most of the notes are going from down to up the tone wasn't so sad. It reminded me of a carnival so that is what I thought I will do. So it will be the sound a persin hears in the different parts of a carnival. So, in the beginning, there will be the usual chatter of people that we here the moment we enter the carnival. Then the person goes to different stands and tents and  hears in those places. So if the person goes in the horror stand he will hear the sounds of ghosts and people screaming and laughing. Then the person goes to the food court where he hears food cooking, many people laughing and babies crying.

Three pieces of art

The Flame
In this piece of art, they have used various dark and light colours such as red, black and yellow. To me, they look alike flames rising up. They have strips of white that actually depict the flames. It is quite a different compared to the most drawing of flames as the flames were white.

Rhythm
In this artwork, they have used cubism, which is a form of abstract art in which shapes art laid on top of each other. The tone is it is quite upbeat. They have various colours and the artist has used contrasting colours side by side. but they are only bright.

Several circles
It has a dark background and it has many irregular circles. They are mostly neon colours and the tone is quite a mysterious. I think this because most of the dark background. It was quite interesting as they weren't actually perfect circles and that this added to the appeal of the abstract art.

Three pieces of music

John Cage- Sonata for prepared piano
It has an upbeat beat behind and on top of that he has put irregular beats on top of it. He has used a piano and there is a regular beat through that song but in some places, it falls completely silence.

Sequenza-
There is a sound that sounds like a flute in between when it falls completely silence, then all of a sudden there is a women's voice making weird noises, that were apparently words. In some parts, she starts laughing and in between she is singing and there are irregular pauses. It is quite different and it is really weird. Also, the way she had written the music was quite interesting.

Stravinsky- no 3
There is a violin and the pace is quite fast. There is a rhythm but it isn't distinguishable as it was too fast. But is was actually a clarinet. It is incredible that some instruments can sound so similar. I liked this one the most as it actually sounded nice but still had the abstract effect to it.

Final Outcome

As we had to listen to our choice of music while doing the artwork, I selected the song Fade (NCS Release).  In the artwork, I used the various components of art, such as movement, pattern, space, emphasis, texture and line. I have showed movement in the in the triangles next to the speaker. They depict the movement of the music in the room. The lines behind the doodle of the headphones show the uneven rhythm and movement of the music. As it uses a synthesizer and mixes various tunes together I decided to use it as a part of my artwork as it reflects on how the artwork is made. Although it is electronic and we can dance to it its is quite a sad tune. The composer was going through a tough stage when he did. Due to this, I mostly used a lot of darker and cool tones, and not warmer tones.

The title of the song fade gave the idea of the background. I was a  risk-taker as am not very good with paints and ink. I also used the patterns as there were regular patterns with the music in the back and they followed a pattern. I have emphasized the headphones which come out a lot more due to the colors in the backgrounds, which I did using color pencils. Also, the faded pink music notes in the background as there was a lot of space there. I organized my work as I planned in advance what I had to do and enjoyed working on it.

Workshop- Different stations

During the lesson, we had different stations, on which various materials were kept which we could use. For each station we had fifteen minutes to come up with a composition and a different song was played. we had to create a visual interpretation of the rhythm, tone and the beat using them. This was the first time we created an art while listening to abstract music and it was quite interesting. Although I didn't particularly enjoy the lesson as I was working with mediums that I was not comfortable with, it was challenging and something I hadn't tried before.

Title page

This is the first assessment we got. We had to make a title page using an instrument and music notes over the winter break. I made my title page using zen doodles and used a guitar and a trumpet. I also used a treble clef and music notes.

Vocabulary List

In the lesson, we discussed the similarities and differences between music and art. This helped us a lot because we had to make a presentation based on artists pieces which they made based on music. We also learnt about the various components of music and art and what different techniques we could use to analyse art but also use in our work.

Abstract art

This piece of art was done while we were listening to Richard Wager's composition. He was the musician that Wassily Kandinsky listened to while painting his work. Trumpets were the major instrument used in the composition. There were two of them used, and while one of it was in a flow the other one didn't have a continues rhythm. There were other instruments as well which is shown using the patterns behind the trumpets. Most of them were a constant melody in the background apart from one. It used to stop or start all of a sudden, which I showed using the pattern right on the top.

Painting with sissors

In this piece of artwork, we had to create using prices of paper of various colors, shapes and textures while interpreting the music. We were listening to a composition piece and the paper shapes are our interpretation of how the music will look like virtually.

Abstract Art

Reflection :

At first I didn't understand what I had to do in the ppt.  But as I searched the web and saw other artists analyse paintings and work I understood. I have done the Pablo Picasso and Vasily Kandinsky. Their works truly inspired me and I thought the pieces of work were completely different types and completely unique although they were made around the same period (WW1).
